Meteor shower viewing

From staff reports

With the annual Perseid meteor shower continuing, the High Desert Astronomical Society is hosting a public observation night at the Lewis Center Observatory tonight.

The Perseid meteor shower, the most visible shower of the year, will peak between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m. Also, Venus, Uranus and Neptune will be in view.

At the Lewis Center, a video system will also be used for easier viewing. Admission is free.

The meteors are basically specks of dust from the tail of Comet Swift-Tuttle that burn up when they strike Earth's upper atmosphere at about 130,000 mph............
