Mojave River crossing rebuilding set

Reconstruction of the washed-out Rock Springs Road crossing of the Mojave River, between Apple Valley and Hesperia, is expected to begin Monday.

The $1.2 million project is expected to be completed by Sept. 30, said Bill Postmus, chairman of the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors.

The project is the first in the state to receive emergency environmental approval since January's storms.

The crossing, used by 11,000 vehicles daily, was closed Jan. 7 after it was severely damaged by floodwaters.

County supervisors awarded the reconstruction contract to Bonadiman-McCain Inc. of San Bernardino.

Postmus said it would cost about $9 million to construct a bridge over the river.
