On the other side of the coin, Mrs Bear and I met a really fantastic NPS ranger named Jim while camping at Toroweep on the north rim of the Grand Canyon. He took the time to talk to everyone in the 10 site campground there on a daily basis and it was nice to know someone would be looking for us in the remote backcountry if we were to not return to our campsite. Meeting individuals like this helps renew my faith that a few bad apples dont ruin the whole bunch.
Over on Lake Powell, we talked to a NPS employee who complained about the head busting ticket writing attitude of some of the Rangers there. We lamented the old school way of the Park Ranger being there to assist the public. Although some boneheads need tickets, the majority of people are law abiding and we like seeing the friendly Ranger on patrol. Sadly, the recent tragedy in Crator Lake illustrate why these Rangers carry guns and sometimes are forced to use them.
