Thanks for the advice ... we take plenty of extra gas (2 of those big gas cans - the square ones - think they're 5 gallons each) and plenty of non-perishable foods. We even bring along MRE's - they are very compact, don't spoil and are high in calories if you do get stuck.
Last February when the big storms came through, there were quite a few people trapped for about a month until the snow melted out of the passes. I'm not sure if I'd even want to see the road conditions after the melt-off! But there were quite a few little, 2-wd sedans and even a converted bus!
At least during the winter one can always seek warmth from the pools if you get cold. But you really have to be prepared for anything ... wind, rain, snow, etc.
