Harold Johnson is Supervisor Recreation Chief of the Barstow Office. I spoke to him specifically about J1299 and related issues.
Indian Burial Grounds: Harold Johnson said that J1299 goes no where near the burial grounds.
Rockshelter: Harold Johnson said it was a place where people lived, however, there are no indian cultural artifacts that would be at risk of vandalism or looting.
Boobytraps: Harold Johnson said there is an ongoing investigation into who may be responsible for setting the boobytraps. I observed that it would be difficult to find out who this individual(s) is, Harold Johnson responded with "no comment". He said that the first booby trap was found eight months ago and it was a three foot board with nails pounded through it. (I would suggest that we could request the incident report on this first boobytrap, however, since it is an ongoing investigation, the BLM most likely would withhold it)
Public process for J1299: Harold Johnson said that the Juniper Flats route designation was not discussed until very late in the meeting process. He said that the public comments made by MojaveGreen and Laughingbear were included in the public process for Juniper Flats. Harold Johnson said that he has your names down as having attended the Juniper Flats meetings where the routes were discussed.
**I was able to confirm this with a citizen that Juniper Flats was put on the back burner during the road meetings and was not discussed until the last few meetings which were attended by Mojavegreen and Laughingbear.
Prior trail records: In 1987 the BLM did mapping of the area, however, they did not include the trails.
