The BLM has introduced an amendment to the WEMO plan giving sanction to the illegal and undesignated trail through the Juniper Flats Area of Environmental Concern. This critical riparian area is one of the only water sources to the wildlife in the area and home to ancient cultural sites. Despite being closed to motorized vehicle traffic since the Willow Fire, the non complient motorcycle crowd have been violating the law by riding this trail. This trail was NOT marked on any map or included in the WEMO plan. After concerns were vocalized at the recent BLM meeting in Victorville about this trail and lack of law enforcement by local residents, the BLM responded with a proposal to destroy the area with MORE OHV abuse and give this trail an open status.
The local residents are outraged at this flagrant disregard for the protection of critical natural resources in the area. We dont think it is good planning to run a motorcycle trail through an area of environmental concern. The window for public comment on this decision is closing and we have until Sept 12 to get comments to the BLM. I will post more information tomorrow regarding the specific route designation to include in your comments. Thanks to all who care and want to help.
