North Bench neighbors clash on manure, kennel

by ZACHARY AMENDT
Staff Reporter

Something smells in East Yucaipa. And it's not manure.

When two large chicken ranches closed near Oak Glen Road, the ever-ambient cloud of flies thinned almost overnight. So did the smell.

Now, say some longtime North Bench residents, the pests are ATVs, makeshift racetracks and a pervasive unneighborliness that all but sums up the attitudinal divide between rural and urban, old and new, yeoman and yuppie.

It used to be horses could ride on East Yucaipa's sleepy streets. Now it's dirt bikes and SUVs that deepen the potholes.

The consensus solution to these clashing lifestyles is empathy, a little "love thy neighbor." But, there doesn't appear to be a whole lot of that going around the North Bench. ............
