The chemuhavi tribe was around long before Fremont came along and they still live here. Mrs Bowen remembered a family from the Newberry Springs area that would harvest pinyon nuts in the Juniper Flats/Deep Creek area and pass by her homestead. Perhaps this river is named for the people who lived nearby when Fremont was passing through.
