Wizard:
The trail from route 173 was the one I was thinking of. I've never hiked the PCT upstream of the hot springs, but that is on my short list of things to do.
The purpose of my post was to give warning of what I consider a significant hazard. As somebody who formerly made his living as a whitewater guide, I know something of swift water. I consider the Deep Creek crossing to be currently unsafe, until the water level drops, for anybody who is not a strong swimmer. Yes, the rope is getting brittle and could break.
Everybody use and enjoy the hot springs, but be cognizant and respectful of hazards.
