Reading Laughingbear's post regarding the vandalism and theft to BLM's fence in the Juniper Flats area, and Jennifer Foster's response, I'd like to offer my opinion:
I don't think the fence is "Illegal" as Ms. Foster declares, since it was installed as part of an established cooperative agreement between Mr. Greenwalt and the BLM. Range improvement money was apparently used for this project, and its purpose may well have been the control of BLM permitted livestock, as well as controlling OHV trespass into an Area of Critical Environmental Cooncern (ACEC) which includes a riparian area.
What seems to be "Illegal" to me is Vehicle Route J1299, which was "Burned" into the landscape, through the ACEC, in seeming disregard for BLM's normal planning processes. True "Multiple Use" includes providing adequate protection for special areas, especially those designated by the agency as ACEC's, instead of circumventing the planning processes to maximize non-conforming uses.
I also find it interesting that Chief Ranger Nelson finds time to coordinate with fringe groups like PFPL, but blows off or unnecessarily antagonizes groups who don't share his narrow views.
