We took a sunday drive from Juniper Flats to Forest Falls yesterday and found the whole forest to be stressed from the drought. The Pinyon forest off hwy18 between Lucerne and Baldwin lake is alive and healthy but the pinyonnut crop is dismal. We checked out the area near the Bighorn wilderness that is proposed to be included in Boxers bill.Wild and roadless at this time but vulnerable to stripmining like the rest of the north face near Lucerne.
We then boogied around Baldwin Lake and hit Hwy38 over onyx summit. We hung a left at Heart Bar and proceded out to Coon Creek jumpoff. This is where the PCT drops down...down...down...Many trees dying from drought stress beetle infestation even in the higher elevations. The manzanita berries are few this year as well.Hiking around we came across many old logs torn up from the bears.
The drive ended at El Mexicano in Forest Falls. Its a great little hole in the wall place that serves up some dang good food along with music played by these two old hippies.Check it out if youre ever in the area and the scenery is worth the drive. Many giant cedar trees inhabit this valley and lots of bears! Peace and enjoy
