Fortunately for both of us, Wizard, I don't believe that anyone has suggested that DCHS visitors or hikers are the reason for the toad becoming endangered. So, the likelihood of the springs being closed for that reason doesn't seem too large to me. It is possible, though, that the human waste so close to the stream could be a problem for the toad or other species of plant or animal (including people). (One of the reasons I would like to be involved with a group dedicated to the preservation of the springs) I think you are right that there are relatively few visitors to DCHS, relative to beaches at least, but I have seen more than 100 in one weekend, and that is definately enough to have a negative impact, especially when they don't all use good sense. But, that is what forming the group is about, to have a group of people actively doing all the things that Paul has always done...promoting good etiquette through friendly discussion and doing a little more than his share to clean up the area.
