There were probably 50 people in total, a handful of topless women, and only two other nude people who left shortly after I got down. There were also four or five dirt bikes on the beach and three more parked up on the trail from Bowen Ranch. :/

Anyways, I did the hike down nude and didn't see any other nude hikers sadly. Laid out in the sun for a while then I moved to the water. The pools themselves were nice as always and the creek was felt a little warmer and lower. Still chilly but it was hot out so it refreshing. The hike up done nude as well and was uneventful. I showered and had fun with exploring the campground a bit more before getting dressed and heading out.

Trip report 5-3-2024 first snake! YIKES! (no replies)

As I was heading to the springs I saw a 3 foot long rattle snake stretched out on the road. So, I backed up and took its picture. It was the first snake I have seen this year. I was about 1 1/2 mile before the Bowen ranch. So, beware !
I got to the springs a few minutes before 11 am. There was not a cloud in the sky and a cool breeze made for a comfy hike. When I got my thermometer out the air temp was 74 degrees. The creek water where most cross was 62 degrees. There was about 15 to 20 persons scattered around. Five were through hikers. Later in the day several more showed up. For those who do not know, the Pacific Crest trail goes through the valley. Through hikers hike through on the trail and most stop to rest, eat, relax and clean up. Good idea! As you can imagine after hiking 15 to 20 miles a day on average. They are tired, hungry and smell. I always enjoy meeting and talking with them. They are strong and muscular and beautiful people. Later I met a woman whom made me wish I had brought my back pack so I could got with her. She had Long beautiful gray hair and a nice spirit came from her. She made my day.
About 330 pm I got my thermometer out to take the pool temps.
The water about 15 feet up stream from the AZ. Pool was 55 degrees.
At the Arizona pool some one had put sand bags just below the source. The temp there was 110. The spring there come out at 108 so the sunshine was doing it's thing. On the upstream side of the pool we're several sand bags. I arranged them to block the water from there better. As I was doing this a guy came by with some more sand bags and shovel. We made about 10 more sand bags up and put them on the down stream side of the pool. Before we put the additional bags there the temp was 69 degrees. Afterwards, the temp was 75 degrees. Afterwards this pool was crowded with a large amount of soakers. As the day went forward a large amount of campers started to show up. Many were party animals drinking, smoking and getting loud. Basically enjoyingng life at my favorite hot spring.
At the Anniversary pool a friend had cleaned this pool very well. Except there was too much litter which I packed out. The temp there was 110. The sun did that.
The Womb pool was crowded also. But clean and a pleasant soak. The temp was 105. Hotter than usual.
The Serenity pool was nice at 108 degrees most of the water from the Crab Cooker pool was flowing into it. The Crab Cooker pool was 114 degrees cooler than usual. Dunno why. The Contemplation pool was 95 degrees warmer than expected.
For anyone who has not been to the new camp ground, I highly recommend it. Not just for the picnic tables and fire rings. But the friendly atmosphere and fun that can be had there. When I left there were 5 vehicles in the old parking lot called the Bowen ranch. And too many to count at the NEW camp ground. Just saying!
After all this it continued to get too crowded so I left earlier than I wanted to.
Happy hot springing in the springtime!

Trip report March 9 2024 (6 replies)

I drove to the Freedom trailhead to see how the resent rain storms had affected the roads. They were terrible. The only time I had seen it this bad was in the 90`s after it had rained every day for more than 2 weeks. I scraped the bottom of my truck more than 2 times. There were also many mud puddles still in the road. I will NOT go back this route again until mother nature fixes the road.
I got to the springs at 1 pm. When I pulled out my thermometer the air temp was 60 degrees. The water was 49 degrees. I could see probably 30 - 40 people around. I swam as fast as I could to cross the creek. Others were crossing by walking down stream a bit. The water there was up to their chest. This took 3 times longer than swimming.
The first regular I saw was mayor David. I chatted with him about 20 minutes.
Afterwards I went around and checked the temperatures of the pools. The water of the creek was at the same level as the Serenity pool. Witch was muddy some what with leaves and debris on its bottom. Some one had removed the sand bags there that had directed the water from the Crab Cooker pool to this pool when the water was higher. I corrected this situation later in the day just before I left at sun down. Because it was not crowded then. The temp of the water was 105 degrees in the Serenity pool.
The temp of the Womb pool was 103 degrees, this was warmer than expected also.
The Anniversary pool temp was 105 degrees. Also warmer than expected. It was a bit muddy also. So, I went up to the source by the Pacific Crest trail to investigate why the water was muddy.? An African guy and an Arabian fellow had and were building a pool there. The water temp was 119 degrees. They asked me to not get in because the water was too hot they said with an Arab accent. They spoke to each other in an Arab language. I told them I was tough just like them. But did not sit down like they did as the pool was too small. Again later in the day, just before sunset, I went and tore this pool down so this heated water could go to the other pools.
The Arizona pool was about 4-6 inches under the height of the creek. There was no sand in the pool at all. And the plug from the drainage pipe was missing. Someone had put sandbags just below the source to make a small pool there only big enough for 2 people. Most were only soaking their feet and splashing the hot water on themselves. The temp upstream from the AZ pool was 47 degrees.
As I looked around the beach area I spotted 7 tents and 2 other areas where people had just piled up camping equipment. Kind of strange as there is no moon light now. The good
news is there was no trash to be found anywhere.
While soaking in the Womb pool I got into a conversation with 4 guys from Colorado. I got into telling them about my time when I worked at the nuclear test site in Nevada which was an incredible and multifaceted experience. As my stories became complicated they explained they had done some LSD just before I had got there. And they were extremely fascinated by my stories, tell us more. This seemed like it took 1 hour BUT, it took more than 2 hours. Whereupon they announced that I appeared like a wizard.? That was when they all retired to their camp site amazed beyond belief. VERY INTERESTING!!!!!!
As I crossed the creek to go home an unmarked helicopter came flying low and slow over the canyon. I started to get out my camera but, it appeared the copter was about to hit the cliff just above me. So, I ran as quickly as I could. Luckily it did not. So I took pics of it as it was leaving. Then some people from China came to me asking what to do? I explained to them how to cross. It was an elderly couple and their 30ish son. Only the son spoke English. As they were crossing the father got caught in the current and started drowning. Again, I ran as fast as I could to attempt to rescue him. His son got there first, luckily. So, there is a lesson there for us all, be aware at all times.
And now I would like to vent about the driving situation I experienced this trip.
As I was driving on Bowen ranch road a group of motorcycles came from the opposite direction. The first group of 3 were coming toward me around a curve in the road. One of them was looking at the guy beside him and did not see me about to hit him. I blew my horn to get his attention and made a hard left turn into the embankment. He leaned to the left missing me by inches. I felt like cussing at him but did not. About 8 more cycles came around the curve all slamming on their brakes. I had to pull off the embankment to get the dirt off my bumpers and tires. They all continued on, teenagers all. I hope they learned a lesson !
Then as I left on central Avenue as I got near where the railroad crossing is a monster truck with extra bright lights was coming the opposite direction. I flashed my bright lights on an off hoping he would turn off his lights. But noooo. I could not even see my windshield. So I had to stop in the road so I would not crash.
Beam me up Scotty as there is no intelligent life here !!!

I have been avoiding them because of bad reports and these new people living in the area. My son came out and told me, “mom don’t go” that is quite disappointing considering his initials are to this day carved into the trees on the creek. He did tell of some of horrors being committed against the area and it is apparent that the curse of the round mountain ranch still goes on. I have always wondered with an aw how people could get so serious over a $1- almost like they had visions of grandeur! And how they could eat their fellow man over it. What a joke! You ain’t going to get rich off the gate take keepers!
These people are a class of people I call “ignets”. They are the ones that get full of this imaginary power and at the expense of water sources and the environment, exert that false authority. Instead of being stewards of the lands and give thanks for their allowance to be their, the argue and scrap I’ve shit that has no true value- all the while these other ignets are painting on rocks, trashing the area and shitting in the creek!
They don’t get it! This was a Piper Comanche, possibly with a light-colored body. Curious if anyone who's visited the area for decades remembers the wreck, which was about 200 yards up from the creek. I arrived Thursday afternoon to the campground which had only a few people camping and got nude and stayed that way until I left Sunday night. Campground filled up on Friday with several other people also nude but majority clothed. Friday am I headed to springs which was a good mix of about 30 people half naked half clothed, headed back way too late and the hike kicked my ass and it got dark and I went up last part wrong way but figured it out, didn't go down Saturday and was about to leave Sunday am but as I was coming from taking a shower a naked girl asked if I was heading down bc she was looking for someone to take the hike with so my plans immediately changed and headed back down for another great day

Campground. Persons at the campground were heading to the burning man art festival.
Yesterday I got to the springs at 1:30 pm. It must have been Mexican appreciation day. There were at least 30 Mexican men there. Only 2 Mexican women and the boom box had the same songs I have heard for decades playing. So I did the only thing I knew to do. I took a 2 hour nap. There was only 2 other people with European ancestry and one was speaking Spanish with them. This IS the greatest country ever.
So at 4:20 I got my new thermometer out. It said the air temp was 89 degrees. All temps of the pools were taken at their center near the surface.
The Arizona pool is leaking again, it was just a little more than half full. The temp there was 113 degrees. I suppose it was leaking because of storm damage. The creek is around 6 inches higherr than the week before.
The Anniversaty pool was 109 degrees. I took the blue hose out and cleaned the dead algae and trash out of the pool. It over heated me but that just makes me stronger.
The womb pool was 106 degrees. Hotter than I expected. I got the hose out and with a little help from friends we cleaned the dead algae out of this pool also. Thank you seniors and seniorettas. The Serenity pool was having the water deverted from the Crab Cooker pool directly into it. The temp was 107 degrees. The Contemplation pool was full of burrito eaters, thank you for the good food, really needed it. The temp there was 96 degrees. Even hotter was the sauce.
The creek water at the spot @20 feet upstream from the Arizona pool was 76 degrees. The creek water where most cross the creek was 78 degrees.
I only found a large piece of aluminum foil 2 water bottles and an ugly t shirt for my trash collection. Thanks everyone for help with that.
As the sun set a large group of women, all sizes and shapes showed up as I left. Most with sleeping bags and tents. Another terrific time to be at my favorite hot spring.

The most dangerous conditions are expected over
the mountains. Potential impacts include:
- Major rainfall flooding may prompt many evacuations and rescues.
- Small streams, creeks, canals, arroyos, and ditches may become
dangerous rivers. Destructive runoff may rage down mountain
valleys while increasing susceptibility to rockslides, mudslides,
and debris flows.
Proposed changes to recreation fees identified by the San Bernardino National Forest (no replies)

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif., July 21, 2023 – The San Bernardino National Forest is proposing changes to recreation fees at nine developed recreation sites on the three ranger districts of the forest.

Currently, approximately 40 percent of day-use sites, overnight camping sites and other developed recreation sites are managed without user fees.

“We recognize how important these sites are to our local communities and those who use the sites,” said Jonar Rodrigo, Southern Zone Adventure Pass and Recreation Fee Program Manager with the San Bernardino National Forest. “These fee increases will help us maintain the sites to the level and quality people have come to expect, as well as make the fees more consistent throughout the state.”

The proposed fees by site and ranger district follow: at the Front Country District, the Applewhite Campground fee would increase from $10 to $25 for a single site. At the Mountain Top District, the Big Pine Flat OHV Staging Area fee would go from free to $5 per vehicle. At the San Jacinto District, the Pinyon Flats Campground fee would increase from $8 to $20 per night and $5 to $10 per additional vehicle; at the Marion Mountain, Fern Basin and Boulder Basin campgrounds the fees would be increased from $10 to $20 per night and $5 to $10 per additional vehicle; the Dark Canyon Campground fee would go from $12 to $20 a night and $5 to $10 per additional vehicle; the Ribbonwood Equestrian Campground fee would change from $15 to $30 per night, and; the Black Mountain Group Campground fees would increase from $50 to $100 (1-24 people), $75 to $150 (25-49 people), $110 to $200 (50-74 people) and $140 to $225 (75-100 people).

At the newly built OHV staging area at Big Pine Flat, the Annual Adventure Pass and the full suite of Interagency Passes would be honored.

The public is invited to comment on the proposed fee changes to the developed recreation program. The comment period is set to end by close of business on Oct. 1. Bring or mail your written comments to San Bernardino National Forest, Attention: Jonar Rodrigo, 602 S.
Trip Report 5-19 2023 , second snake (5 replies)

I arrived at the new campground at 1 pm. It was another weather perfect day. The wind was gently blowing into my face the whole way down hill. And there were powder puff clouds blocking the hot sun occasionally. There were only about 20 persons around the spring area. And @ 12-15 through hikers around the beach area. More PCT hikers appeared later.
I had a thermometer with me. All temps were taken near the center of the pools and near their surface. The creek has gone down enough so all pools are now above the creek water height. The Arizona pool has some creek water flowing into it making the water colder than usual. The temp there was 96 degrees. It was much warmer near the spring side of the pool. Some one had blocked the flow with rocks and sand up hill near the source. So I took them down so it would flow directly into this ( many persons favorite pool). The Anniversary pool was baking in the sun. The temp there was 112 degrees. Some one had obviously just cleaned the debris from this pool. Thank you to whomever. The Womb pool was also warmer than usual at 108 degrees. The Serenity pool was a real delight at 106 degrees. The Contemplation pool had two Africans lovers in it so I did not bother them. They were talking in what sounded like swahilly, an African language. I wondered if they got here legally. Non of my business! They had a beautiful appearance. And seemed to be deeply in love, hopefully.
As the hours passed people were cooling off by jumping into the creek. The water temp at where the beach area was 52 degrees. The water up stream from the Arizona pool was 50 degrees. The outside air temp was 86 degrees. Just before the sun started to go behind the mountain top a large cloud covered the sky cooling every thing and every one for the hike out and up hill. Perfect!
On this trip every one seemed to be very happy to be in my favorite hot spring.
EXCEPT !!! AS I was leaving I found a large bag with about 30 pounds of ugly stinking trash. As I got near to where the raft is to cross the creek I found a smaller bag with about 10 pounds of ugly stinking trash in it. So I put the small bag into the larger bag and hauled it up the big hill. This would have not have been possible if that big beautiful cloud were not there. WTF ! PLEASE every one. Help keep D.C.H.S. clean and beautiful. PLEASE!

The weather was so delightful I had to hike to my favorite hot spring. The air temp was in the 60s and the sunshine felt refreshing. When I got to the springs a raft was roped across the creek. What a nice surprise because the creek temp was still in the 40s. Almost no one were jumping into the cold creek.
The creek is still above the Serenity and Crab Cooker pools, about 6-8 inches. When I looked at the Arizona pool it appears the large Boulder that makes up the west side of the pool has moved into the river about 2-4 feet. I was shocked! Also a large Boulder has lodged itself where the upstream barrier is. I had to feel around to see if that barrier was still there and could not tell if it is still there. We can only hope ? This shocked me to no end. The only thing certain in life is change. The water is over a foot higher than this pool and moving very rapidly.
While studying all of this a cool group of hippies came around demanding to know where any trash was. This lead to many interesting conversations. They were camping at the campground and had been to the springs 5 times. They said Sunday was a circus day because there were too many persons at the springs to have fun. There were only about 15 - 20 people there on Monday. Everyone had a happy time too. One old time regular in his 70s was at the pools also it was a real pleasure to see him. Someone has shoveled out a small pool just below where the Arizona pool spring is. The spring has moved uphill from where it used to be also. All the sand that used to be on the beach around the down stream side of the Arizona pool is gone. Exposing all the tree roots there.
While I was at it I got my hose out and vacuumed all the dead algae and such from the Anniversary pool. So next time yall show up be amazed at all these changes and HAPPY TAX DAY TO ALL!!!

(no replies)

It was 10:30 when I pulled into the D.C.H.S. My thermometer said it was 62 degrees and there was a 10 mph breeze. Which made it feel kinda chilly. There were 9 vehicles in the Bowen ranch parking area. There were 12 vehicles in the new and improved Deep creek hot springs campground. There was many campers hanging around have breakfast. The smell of camp fires always remind me of the good old days. Or wait were they REALLY?
About 12 persons were leaving the springs as I made it to the beach. About half had sleeping bags in tow. We can guess what they were up to. The water temp at the crossing was 39 degree. It was only up to my belly button and I am 6'2". Still too cold for this Florida boy, but so worth it.
I got angry at all the litter as I got to the beach above the Arizona pool. Later I picked up @ 40 pounds of ugly discussting trash. Most was on the beach before you crossed to the springs. Why do idiots break thick glass bottles then leave it on the beach? (Insert cuss word here)
There probably 30 person around the pools when I got there. About half were nude. I had not heard that schools were out for president' day, ever. There were 4 regulars on this trip.. There were many families with children, a surprise.
At 1:30 I got my pool themomenter out it said the air temp was a perfect 72 degrees and no breeze. Another perfect weather day.
The creek water temp above the Arizona pool was 39 degrees also.
All pool temps were taken near the pool center and near the surface.
The Arizona pool temp was 106 degrees. This pool was crowded most all day. Because it is most peoples favorite.
The Anniversary pool was 102 degrees and also full of happy soakers. The water was a little mucky however.
The Womb pool was 99 degrees and in need of cleaning. Some day...
The Serenity pool was 103 degrees. Many were going back and forth from hot to cold water. I am getting too old for that dang it.
The Crab Cooker pool was 114 degrees. What a delight!
The Contemplation pool was 88 degrees. What a shock, it is usually cooler than that. Plate tectonics perhaps?
Later I discovered that a couple had dammed up and made a pool at the source beside the Pacific coast trail. This was why the Anniversary pool was murky and also that made the pools below a little cooler also. So just before I left I took the damn down.
Everyone everywhere were happy this day. A side from an issue with some dogs everyone was glad to be at my favorite hiking destination.
Happy spring time everybody. And remember to take your ugly trash with you and help out with this problem. PLEASE?

Bowen ranch road report + what ever ? 2-10 2023 (1 reply)

It was another weather perfect day so I was had to revisit my favorite hot spring. As for road conditions I do agree with George. The owner of the D.C.H.SPRINGS CAMPGROUND. He said " the road conditions are almost as good as they have ever been too." They are dry. There are a few more ruts in the road than there were before. One should be carefull to navigate around them. The ruts do not get bad until you go about 4 miles going from the pavement. I told George "If people Love the springs they will make it." Just go slow and be careful.
It was 10:20 am when I pulled into the new and improved campground. Hiked in just as 3 Guatemalan immigrants, first timers, were very interested in learning about these hot springs. You may say I entertained them. And made them more excited to be in this country and at this gift of nature. They got an ear full. They thanked me more than a dozen times.
Many persons swam across the creek. The water was near freezing. It was almost up to my nipples for only about 5 feet in one spot crossing just down stream from the beach. The deep spot is just before you get the other side. Just 3 quick steps and you can get out to yell at your frozen muscles. And it is all so very worth it. The depth just beyond the permanent boulders there was over 5 feet. It was only 2 foot deep there before this last flood. Also, the beach just above the Arizona pool was washed away partially. A new rut has formed to the right side of the spring down to the bed rock. The tall plants to the right side of there were washed down stream almost 2 feet, unusual. As for trash, I only found 1 wine bottle and an ugly piece of burnt aluminum to haul out with me. A GREAT BIG THANK YOU TOO HUMM EVER! Is taking out trash. There were never more than 20 people at the springs at one time. No issues at all. Everyone happy all day long.
I had a thermometer with me but !!! It gave me too cold a reading to be believed. Every pool was clean and GREAT for soaking. I hope this helps everyone who is thinking of visiting.
Have a happy football celebration everyone !

Trip report 9-29-22 Thursday (2 replies)

It was another weather perfect day. Makes me wish I were at my favorite hot spring. So, I got to the new campground at 11 am. Explored their new trash dumpster. I was at the springs the previous Friday. I was up set at my self because, there were 2 large bags of trash when I got there and I filled another 40 gallon bag to almost full. But my left knee was hurt and swollen. Hot water soaking was not helping either. But, I decided to not put anymore weight on it. I attempted to bribe some locals to carry it out and only got one taker. A beautiful couple from San Diego carried out one bag. 'One for the team' they said.
So while talking to the campground managment I learned they had done a trash pickup at the springs. When I got to the springs it was almost no trash at all. BUT, when a Mexican family left I filled a 13 gallon bag of their stupid looking trash. This time I tied it onto my day pack on the way out.
The Anniversary pool was clean and pretty. Except, someone had diverted 90 % of the water flow directly to the Womb pool. Makeing the womb pool at about 104 degrees. And the anniverary pool @ 98 degress. The couple from San Diego notified me of this situation. So, I adjusted the flow back to 90 % back into the Anniversary pool. Just before hikeing out I soaked there for more than an hour alone, listening to the sound of the splashing water, my mind drifting off into nature. No one was there but me , myself and nature.
The Womb pool was algae free. No floaties or trash anywhere. The temp when I left was back to @ 102 degrees.
The Contemplation pool was in the low 80's. It was a little slippery from algae growth.
The Crab cooker pool seemed to be hotter than before. Too hot to sit in. Maybe the sun shining there had something to do about it. Or maybe a sign of earth plate tectonics?
Note to self: buy a infra red thermometer, soon.
The Serenity pool was very clean and refreshing. It gets hotter on the side where water comes in on the Crab cooker side and cooler on the Womb pool side. So it is nice for changing temps. Then jumping into the creek :=)
The creek has cleared up from looking like gravey soup to about 80% of its normal self. My 5 1/2 month old dog thought he had a chance of catching the fish or tadpoles. I constantly tell him, 'you got a lot to learn BOY!'
Oh! I forgot to tell the story of two young women I saw setting in the shade of the sign at the kiosk at the lower parking area. They yelled at me as to where the Bowen ranch was? They were from Hollywood. Another lost angel. . . So the songman sang. Of course I showed them the way. They had no water so I gave them my 1 quart power aide bottle that was still cold. They had got to the springs at 8am for their first time there. Spent 1 hour the springs. Then went down stream and climbed out. I suspect they climbed out from the Indian camp area. And were lost and thirsty. As always GLAD TO HELP! They told me they would be back, but better prepaired and wiser. Peace Out!

Trip report 99-22 Friday (1 reply)

It was 12:30 When I got to the D.C.Campground. Talked with owners @ 40 to 50 minutes. It was my first sign of fall so I had to take this chance to go to my favorite hot spring. Only a slight breeze and maybe 80 degrees. With no clouds in the sky. Saw no one on the trail. When I got to the springs only about 12 persons were there. Most notable were two naked women who were there about 3 weeks earlier when I was there last. We had a lovely reunion. These women have a love for the springs and a positive vibe that rubed off onto me. Nothing sexual !? Thank you Noella. It seemed to be another epic hot spring day. Except the water in the creek was opaque. I read the previous post about the freedom trailhead, and agree with neogeos post. The temp of the water was between 70-75 degrees. But you were likely to bump into something if you do not know your way around. During the past 2 months a guy who calls himself Sky, myself and the owners of the campground have removed all the trash from the spring area. A huge amount of trash. This happened from everyone efforts and sweat. Thanks to all who partisapated which were many.
The pool at the source next to the Pacific crest trail (P.C.T.) was damned up to make it about 1 foot deeper. This caused the Anniversary pool to be too cool for this weather. Sky had informed me but was unable to determine the cause. So I tore down the damn which caused the water in the pools below to warm back up. Some one has been keeping the algae from collecting in pools,Thanks to Sky, all the pools are clean and prestine.
About the freedom trailhead. The resent rains have caused erosion to increase on the road used for access. A high clearance vehicle is more nessary than before. But the area was clean and a great place for camping. I think it was 2 full moons ago when I was last there. I recommend the place for people who want to camp out with out a crowd and for lovers. It is great! But beware, anything is possible, I have been awakened by late night party animals when I least expected THAT. It is like I tell people, you never quite know what can or will happen when you go to the springs. Expect the unexpected, and enjoy yourself as much as possible. You may even run into me there. :=)

Freedom Trail Parking Info? The wife and I are finally planning on going again later this week, and I was wondering what the status of the Freedom Trail parking area was? Reading through the last few years of posts on here, it seems like there's been some changes at Bowen, there's a new campground/parking area, and not a lot of info concerning Freedom. Are you still able to park there? Has anyone experienced any reports of people messing with vehicles parked there? I remember that that was a concern when I went back in the day, but am not sure of the current state of things.

More or less, hoping someone can help inform me on what's going on topside, and what the current recommendations are for parking/boondocking.

sept 15 at the springs (4 replies)

Cooler temperature brought me out for a late summer visit. But not many others: I found myself one of two cars at the old Bowen parking (new campsite owners). Saw no one on the trail but some critters. I knew the rain would effect the creek, but thought it would be settled down by now; was not the case. The creek is running chocolate milk brown, which I have not even really seen during winter rains. It is a sight to see, really. The water is opaque - you cannot see anything, even your own body, below the surface. So watch your step and your toes, muscle memory of where there are rocks in the water took over for me when I swam in the murk. (And the water is pretty cold for summer too.) Creek is still shallow at the crossing, taken over by massive groves of reeds on both shores. It has gone quite deep just below the Womb and Serenity pools, where there was the sandbag pool most summers in recent years. No longer.

I'm posting on here mainly because "Sky" asked me to - he wanted to see if Jobe would see this. He seems to have done a lot down there, to my eyes (haven't been in a while). The piles of trash are all gone. There are a lot of "plantings" - some cactus up high on the beach area, some manzanita bushes, things like that. Even where there is not planting, has the creek been this lush in a while? Anniversary Pool almost has full shade cover with the reeds and trees and berry plants growing alongside, right up to the walls - like it used to have when a willow tree shaded the spot 20 years back. But Sky wanted me to let Jobe know the pool is leaking in at least three spots (though the pool was full to its level). And he is trying to fix a dam someone built up toward the source pools, diverting the flow with effects on the Womb pool mostly. So I am reporting that in to Tallahassee ...

Morning hours - just me and this guy Sky, a woman on her own floating on a raft, that's it. In the afternoon, maybe 10 people at most. I dismantled some fire rings, they are the obvious problem with most of the trash gone. Found a little bit of glass and bottle caps to hike out. The most evident issue is the rabid spread of graffiti on the trail from the desert side. There is stupid graffiti on half the rocks on the trail at this point. Its everywhere.

Otherwise, beautiful day, quietest day I've had out there since the pandemic. Really beautiful, the springs are right now.

I removed 5 sandbags from it that served no purpose.
The Anniversary pool was hotter than usual, but still a pleasure. For @ 10 minuets.
The Arizona pool was not full the water was @ 8-10 inches below from where it spills out. This causes the leaves to collect on the surface. I cleaned out most of them.
The Womb pool like the Anniversary pool was warmer than usual. Spent most of my soaking time there. Because it was so clean and great.
The Serenity pool had sandbags blocking the waters exit. That and the flow coming from the Crab Cooker pool made the temp much warmer. Also, someone had removed most of the sand there. Making for an excellent soak. Thank you to whom ever.
The temperature of the creek is near the summer temp range. But still nice enough to cool down some.
During the day, no more than 30 persons at the springs at any one time. The temperature was never over 80 degrees. Everybody was happy and friendly. I learned she was a yoga instructor from Los Angeles or lost angles in English. It was impossible to ignore her beauty. I knew by her vibe it was gonna be a good day and it was a very good day.
The Contemplation pool was full and a real joy. I am guessing it was between 85-90 warm.
No drama or issues of contention what so ever.
Had to leave early about 4:30. To go to a father's day party. Another ! GREAT ! reason to be alive.
Happy Father's day everyone!

Hardly a naked person could be seen on those days, as these big groups pretty much 'take over' every hot pool at DCHS. We don't typcially see entire families with grandma and all the grand-kids, which makes things quite awkward when it comes to the clothing-optional issue. The Springs are also being strained to it's limits, trash-wise -- Modelo beer cans and bottles, paper plates, toilet paper, diapers, clothing, coolers, cups, and plastic food wrappers left behind for the rest of us to clean up. It's also pretty depressing to see natural plant growth, reeds and trees being being trampled on and destroyed wantonly. "Open Borders" is not working for the Springs: It's destroying it.

No april fooling yesterday was a good day for visiting the springs. The weather was perfect, and so were the vibes. I got to the springs at 9 am. Only about 10 persons were there, later no more than 30 persons at any one time. Everyone were polite and respectful to each other, kind of like one big hot spring family. The only other regular there was a guy my age named Dave. There were 3 tents upstream. I met a through hiker who said there was one other through hiker there also. They had spent the previous day a o or zero day. Meaning a day with zero miles hiked. Through hikers are super humans and awesome.
As I sat on the rocks with Dave he spotted a water snake. He was only about 14 inches long. It is that time of the year again. Watersnakes are not poisonous.he swam aroud outside of the womb pool for @15 minuets.
After serveying the womb pool Dave and I determand. The womb pool was past time for a dead alge and debris cleaning. We spent 3 hours taking turns vacum cleaning the bottom of the pool. And only got about 90 % of the dead alge. Getting old SUCKS! The sandbags that chanel the hot water from the crab cooker pool are still in place. Makeing the Serenity pool about 6-8 inces deeper and much hotter. My thermometer was broke, some how? So no pool temps. The creek water is not too damn cold any more. Most peole were swimming in the creek. There was much entertainment this day Imagine, sitting in the springs, watching professional slage line walkers crossing the creek for hours. That is what me and 20 others did. It was wonderful.

Drove in through bradford, road was icy from Tuesday snow but totally doable. Icy patches in town were more sketchy than that final stretch of 173. No cars parked when we got there around 8:30am. Surprising amount of snow on the trail! Probably 3 inches holding on in some parts, so happy to see after a brutally dry January. As we got closer to the descent to deep creek, I thought the snow would fade but there was actually snow all the way to the springs! Found a hiking pole at the intersection of family canyon and pct and ran into a woman hiking the pct immediately after that. Got to the springs around 9:45am. The pools were so clean! Nobody soaking, saw a big camp in the trees of what turned out to be about 10 people. Spoke to one of them and they were very nice, had camped out during the snow storm and full moon and said it had indeed snowed all down at the springs. They were going around with garbage bags picking up trash. The springs were spotless! They all left later that morning.

And, somebody had brought a whole bunch of sandbags, i assume they filled them with the sand that washed up in the serenity pool. The sand bags were lining the serenity pool and diverting the crab cooker source to make some other mini pools. There were even extra sandbags to use. Not sure if this group was the same. Additionally there was concrete work visible at the bottom of the anniversary pool and at the channel that can be used to divert it to the womb.
Crowd was mostly textiles and mostly on psychedelics. Everyone was pretty chill, groups of 6 and several smaller couples, individuals, one family with 3 kids and some dogs throughout the day. Pretty busy for a Thursday but nothing surprising. No sign of machete man thankfully!

On the way in it was sunny but you could see clouds moving in. My thermometer said it was 62 degrees. There were 17 cars in the Bowen ranch parking lot. I counted 25 cars in the D.C.H.S. campground parking area. But I am certain there were cars elsewhere I could not see. This lead me to expect a crowd at the springs. But as I headed down there were at least 20 persons leaving for the day. One woman was hiking out with 2 teenage boys. When I asked why? She said " there were naked people down there." I apologized for not being there to warn her before hand. When I got to the springs at least 30 persons were meandering around. I counted 8 tents and a couple were sleeping in a hammock. When I measured the temp upstream from the Arizona pool it was 44 degrees. I took the temp where most people cross the creek it was 48 degrees. The Arizona pool was full of happy soakers, the temp there was 104 degrees. The Anniversary pool was 100 degrees. While there I noticed 2 couples were soaking at the source beside the Pacific crest trail. Very hot there. The Womb pool was 95 degrees. Plenty people were enjoying it there. The Serenity pool was 104 degrees.same as the Arizona pool. There is still about 1 foot of sand and debris in this pool. But many were oblivious. Why worry? The Crab Cooker pool was 112 degrees. That is 4 degrees cooler than normal. As the morning turned into evening there were more than 50 persons most of the evening. Upon arriving at the new D.C. hot springs campground I learned that Brent Gaddes, one of the owners of the campground had been shot the previous evening. By Mike Castro, the owner of the Bowen ranch next door. I got 2 very different stories from 2 different people. The police are investigating. Brent was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance. The bullet only glanced his back, bouncing from one side of his back over his spinal column and into the other side of his back. Very fortunate for Brent. He is only able to lay on his stomach in pain. The altercation started by Mike accuseing Brent of stealing his sign. Which is most likely untrue. And even so is no reason to shot an unarmed neighbor. If anyone here has more information about this situation please post that here. Mike was not arrested. Which to me seems to threaten the safety of the area. It is my hope that Brent gets justice for this near death situation. I will update here as more information becomes available.

The outside air temp at 1:30 pm was 67 degrees with a slight breeze to remind you of what a great and beautiful place this is. As I hiked in I came across 3 beautiful women from San Diego. One had been there before, the other 2 were first-timers. They said, "that they really enjoyed their day as they left." The Creek water on the beach where most cross the creek was 34 degrees. I am 6 ft. 2 inches tall the water was just above my knee most of the way. But just before you get to the spring side it gets deeper to just above my manly parts. Just 2 steps and I was on the other side. It just proves if you love the hot springs you will make it; my opinion. If you love the springs you 2 can make it. Sand had filled the Serenity pool. So I pulled my shovel out and dug it out to just over 3 feet deep. It still has over 1 foot of sand. And that has leaves, roots, and stems from the flood mixed into it. So for hairy soakers like me, it takes about 20 minutes to get this out of your hair. The Arizona pool was overflowing and a great soak. I only removed about 25 gallons of the sand from this pool as it was getting dark. I did not have time to get the temps of the pools too. The Arizona pool was 3 feet deep. The storm has reshaped the beach. Also, the source at the Arizona pool now has 2 spring sources as it did about 10 years ago. The roots of all the trees there are exposed. Some of the large boulders in the creek there have moved some. It appeared to be the height of the flood was almost to the top of the Aniversary pool. Or about 30 feet up the hill from the beach at the Aniversary pool. The Aniversary pool was full of naked women so L did not want to upset nature there. The Womb pool was as it always has been the creek did not change anything there. Across the creek from the Womb pool, most of the sand was gone. Remember, when the sun goes down it gets cold FAST! That was my lesson today as I hiked out too late. Be safe and help with the trash problem, PLEASE!

Talked to the owners for about 1/2 hour. They were excited about their new zip line being completed. They are awaiting certification before it can be used by the public. We joked about a zip line to the springs, not likely. The owners were in their usual happy friendly state. They have made a lot of progress in making a world-class campground. They also told me they made a trip to the springs and removed 7 large garbage bags of trash. I can not thank them enough. I got a pretty campsite and went to the springs there were only about 15 persons there. Only one couple were camping out. It was a real pleasure to see no trash anywhere. Throughout the day there were never more than 25 persons there. When I got my thermometer out the air temp was 77 degrees with a gentle breeze of about 5 mph. Only a few small clouds this day. All temps were taken near the center of the pools near the surface. The Arizona pool was beautiful at 105 degrees. Most people I talked with said this was their favorite pool. The Anniversary pool was at 104 degrees. I got the hose there and removed all the dead algae and trash out for a cleaner soak. The Womb pool was at 100 degrees. Most people were hanging around engaging in friendly and polite conversation. They were mostly the 20-30-year-olds. Also a regular by the name of Richard was there he is always a delight to talk with. The Serenity pool was a pleasure to soak in at 103 degrees. The Crab Cooker pool was at 118 degrees as usual. The Contemplation pool was 85 degrees. It is nice to soak in after overheating in the Crab Cooker pool. The creek water just upstream from the Arizona pool was 62 degrees. It was an all-around delightful day to be at my favorite hot springs. And little did I know it was about to get even better. When I got to my campsite I noticed a beautiful young woman camping at the site next to mine. The sun was sinking and I had to get my camping gear ready. Jessie came around to do maintenance to the poop house. The young woman asked her if she could borrow a sleeping bag. Jessie said she would see what she could do. This started a conversation that lasted through the next day. Jessie came back with a sleeping bag for her. We all talked for way too long. As far as I could tell it was a terrific place for sleep as I slept like a rock. The next day the pretty woman invited me for a marvelous breakfast. She made an old man like me feel 40 years younger with her delightful demeanor and positive attitude. We hiked to the spring and talked all day long. She made my day. I will leave the rest to your imagination. A great BIG THANK YOU to all Veterans for their patriotic service to the greatest country in the history of our planet. HAPPY hot springing!

Fire restrictions banning wood and charcoal fires remain in effect throughout the Forest, however these restrictions have been modified to allow the use of portable lanterns and stoves with a shut-off valve in both developed campgrounds and dispersed sites by visitors with a valid California Campfire Permit.

The forest-wide closures on the other three Southern California national forests – Angeles, Cleveland and San Bernardino – will also expire tonight with modified or updated fire use restrictions.

More than 7,400 wildfires have burned approximately 2.25 million acres across all jurisdictions in California this year. As of Sept. 20, the national preparedness level has been lowered to Preparedness Level 4 (PL4); the Northern California Geographic Area was also lowered to PL4 while the Southern California Geographic Area remains at PL4. The Angeles, Cleveland and Los Padres national forests are also extending their forest-wide closures through the same date.

The Regional Order that closed public access to all national forests in California through Sept. 17 will be rescinded tomorrow. Due to ongoing high fire danger and active wildfires across the West, the Southern California national forests will remain closed for another week to better provide for public and firefighter safety. Large numbers of fire personnel from the Southern California national forests are currently demobilizing and returning to their home units after weeks of nonstop work.

By temporarily reducing the numbers of people on the Forest, this closure order will minimize the likelihood that visitors could become entrapped during an emergency and decrease the potential for new fire starts at a time of extremely limited firefighting resources. Severe and persistent drought due to hot and dry weather has led to rapid growth and increasingly unpredictable fire behavior across Northern California with no relief expected until late fall. Conditions in Southern California are similar and likely to worsen.

Currently, there are 11 large uncontained fires burning on National Forest System lands statewide, and there are more than 15,000 personnel, 303 crews and 1,113 engines committed to fire fighting in California. This closure order is intended to reduce the likelihood of a new fire start over the next week.

San Bernardino National Forest officials wish to thank the public for the patience and understanding that has been shown during this challenging fire season.

USDA Forest Service Temporarily Closing All California National Forests for Public Safety (3 replies)

VALLEJO, Calif., — August 30, 2021. To better provide public and firefighter safety due to the ongoing California wildfire crisis, USDA Forest Service Pacific Southwest Region is announcing a temporary closure of all National Forests in California. This closure will be in effect from Aug. 31, 2021 at 11:59 p.m. through September 17, 2021 at 11:59 p.m. This order does not affect the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, which is not in the Pacific Southwest Region.

“We do not take this decision lightly but this is the best choice for public safety,” said Regional Forester Jennifer Eberlien. “It is especially hard with the approaching Labor Day weekend, when so many people enjoy our national forests.”

Factors that led to this decision include:

1. By temporarily reducing the numbers of people on national forests, we hope to minimize the likelihood that visitors could become entrapped on National Forest System lands during emergency circumstances.

2. The closure order will also decrease the potential for new fire starts at a time of extremely limited firefighting resources, and enhance firefighter and community safety by limiting exposure that occurs in public evacuation situations, especially as COVID-19 continues to impact human health and strain hospital resources.

3. Due to state-wide conditions, any new fire starts have the potential for large and rapid fire growth with a high risk to life and property. The Forest Service and our partners are absolutely doing all we can to fight these fires and will continue to do so, but the conditions dictate the need for this region-wide closure order.

4. Forecasts show that conditions this season are trending the same or worse as we move into late summer and fall.

5. Although the potential for large fires and risk to life and property is not new, what is different is that we are facing: (a) record level fuel and fire conditions; (b) fire behavior that is beyond the norm of our experience and models such as large, quick runs in the night; (c) significantly limited initial attack resources, suppression resources, and Incident Command Teams to combat new fire starts and new large fires; and (d) no predicted weather relief for an extended period of time into the late fall.

The following persons are exempt from this Order:

1. Persons with Forest Service Permit No. FS-7700-48 (Permit for Use of Roads, Trails, or Areas Restricted by Regulation or Order), specifically exempting them from this Order.

2. Any Federal, State, or local officer, or member of an organized rescue or fire fighting force in the performance of an official duty.

3. Persons with a Forest Service special use authorization for an electric transmission line, an oil or gas pipeline, communications site, or any other non-recreation special use.

4. Commercial recreational special-use permit holders and their customers are not exempt from this Order. However, commercial recreational special-use permit holders, under the terms and conditions of their permit, may access their permit areas to conduct administrative functions and to protect property and related assets. Recreation residence permit holders are not exempt from this Order.

5. Persons with a Forest Service non-special-use written authorization to conduct non-recreational activities, such as harvesting timber or forest products, or grazing livestock.

6. Owners or lessees of land, and residents of such private landholdings, to the extent necessary to access their land.

7. Persons engaged in a business, trade, or occupation are not exempt from the prohibitions listed above, but may use National Forest System roads to the extent necessary to carry out their business, trade, or occupation. More than 6,800 wildfires have burned 1.7 million acres across all jurisdictions in California, and the National Wildfire Preparedness Level (PL) has been at PL5 since July 14, 2021, only the third time in the past 20 years that the nation has reached PL 5 by mid-July – indicating the highest level of wildland fire activity.

The Forest Service thanks our partners and the public for their cooperation and understanding of this extreme public safety and fire threat. Citizens with specific questions within their area should consult their local forest website or social media pages for more information.

The following restrictions will be rigorously enforced until the end of the declared fire season:

Wood and charcoal fires are prohibited in all areas of Los Padres National Forest including designated Campfire Use sites; however persons with a valid California Campfire Permit are allowed to use portable stoves and lanterns using gas, jellied petroleum or pressurized liquid fuel within the designated Campfire Use Sites only. You must clear all flammable material for a distance of five feet in all directions from your camp stove, have a shovel available, and ensure that a responsible person attends the stove at all times when it is in use. California Campfire Permits are available for free download from the Los Padres National Forest website (http://www.fs.usda.gov/lpnf).

Recreational target shooting is prohibited in all areas of the National Forest except in the two shooting ranges under special use permit, i.e., Winchester Canyon Gun Club and Ojai Valley Gun Club; however, hunting with a valid State of California hunting license during open hunting season is exempt from this restriction.

Smoking is prohibited in all areas of the national forest except within an enclosed vehicle, building, or designated Campfire Use Site.

Fireworks are prohibited at all times and in all locations within Los Padres National Forest.

Operating or using any internal or external combustion engine without a spark arresting device properly installed, maintained and in effective working order on roads and trails specifically designated for such use.
Forest fire restrictions increased (no replies)

Officials with the San Bernardino National Forest are raising fire restrictions tomorrow, June 23, 2021, due to the danger from current and anticipated worsening conditions, such as drying vegetation and continued hot temperatures. The restrictions will affect numerous sites and activities on the Forest by prohibiting the following:

Campfires and wood/charcoal barbeques at unhosted campgrounds and picnic areas

Discharging of a firearm

Smoking

Operating an internal combustion engine off paved, gravel or dirt National Forest System roads and trails

Welding, or operating acetylene or other torch with open flame

There are some exemptions, however. For example, several campgrounds and picnic areas with full-time hosts will allow campfires, barbeques and smoking. Gas-powered stoves and fire rings with a fuel shutoff will be also allowed, including when dispersed camping, if used with a free California Campfire Permit, which can be obtained online. It is important for permit holders to carefully read and follow the terms of the permit.

Another exemption addresses discharging a firearm. While target shooting at recreational sites like Forest Road 1N09 will be prohibited, it will continue to be allowed at shooting ranges under a special use permit. Additionally, visitors with a hunting license will be able to shoot at legal game bird or mammal.

As fire restrictions may increase again later this year, Forest visitors are highly encouraged to always "know before you go" prior to each visit by checking current fire restrictions online or calling a ranger station.

may 4 trip report (5 replies)

I have a partner who is compromised in terms of her health, so had to take COVID very seriously. In other words, it has been the longest I've ever gone without visiting the springs. But I was happy to make it back on Tuesday. I've been wanting to go back for a while but frankly, more than COVID, have been hesitating mainly due to what COVID has done to the place, the crowds that seem to always be out there now, the visitors not in the spirit of the springs.

So .... the last time I visited, there was no Deep Creek Campground yet. They were bulldozing the road to the parking from their new entry. I contemplated the Freedom Trail, but then decided why not try it. It was easy though weird to wind up at the parking lot we always knew as the Bowen Ranch but yet not, and lots of activity trying to care for the area more than was the norm in the past. Trash was not in evidence around the campsites, things were tidy more or less, and I could see some buildout down in the valley where the springs by the Ranch always were, I guess this is where the showers will be or are now? I would camp there, for sure. I just hope it isn't pulling more people out to the springs than normal, all this. Only one other car in the lot in evidence, and nothing over at Freedom from what I could see.

Beautiful hike down. Still spring blooms. Passed three young women hiking out, one at a time, not together. They said it would be quiet down there, and at the springs, as I arrived, there were only three people. So I cooled off in the lagoon and then into the Womb, which I had to myself in the shaded morning. Also had Anniversary to myself a little later. Maybe 20-25 people by the mid afternoon, like normal times I thought, and about 50/50 naturist, with some of the never noods joining our team as the day wore on, and with lots of laughter. Met a few PCT hikers. Saw Chuck and Coppertone in terms of regulars. Really had a great visit.

The Contemplation Pool seems to have sprung a few leaks. It is mostly empty. I thought maybe someone was draining it for cleaning, but the pools in general seem not to have been cleaned in some time. Lots of algae if you soak. But no, it wasn't empty for cleaning. The other pools were all great. I stayed mostly out of them if there was a crowd, and with the low number of visitors, had pools to myself quite a lot. The pile of trash on the beach, around the Woodsy sign, is ridiculous. Really bad - tents, containers, food, a metal folding chair, equipment, pillows and cushions, whatever. The squirrels were constantly in it, making it worse. And there was an army of them, everywhere. They were in my pack, hung high on a tree - the trees that remain, there are some very sad stumps where I once hung my hammock and laid in the shade - they were in it by 10 am already and would not stop their assault. They got part of my food, and ripped open 3 other guys' packs, during the day. I was thinking maybe the rattlers have been attacked by visitors, I've seen some videos posted by the lug heads online, but at least one rattler did show up, and hung out in the bush next to the Phoenix pool all day.

So that's the bad: fire rings all over the once pristine sand. Chopped down trees that should have been loved and cared for. A big pile of trash. Armies of robber baron squirrels. But the place still looked extremely beautiful to me. The Yerba mansa grove behind the pool area in full bloom. Green everywhere. Flowers and gorgeous birds. Ducks in the creek, catfish, tadpoles as big as your palm, life everywhere in abundance. Met some great people, and talked all day as one does. Read a book in the shade. Swam, soaked with my umbrella for shade. Deconditioned for my hike out after the long time away. I will be building back and getting back in shape I hope, and hope the same for the springs.

It was alright - the sites are a little too close together to feel like you have your own space, in my opinion. Plus, some of the sites are in the middle of the parking area with no privacy, and others are on the edge where you can get parked in by people behind you. But decent enough camping setup: picnic table, fire ring (just made of rocks though), a bit of turf to keep your tent from getting too dusty...

Hiked in on 4/11 to the springs, which were pretty crowded. Maybe 50 to 60 people, the majority of the them textiles, but a few groups of people getting undressed/topless. Not much room for social distancing in the pools, but at this point if you aren't vaccinated that's kind of on you. There's a bit of trash around, but I've seen it way worse. It's getting to the time of year when, even overcast, you need to be reapplying sunscreen! Saw a drunk dude nearly fall off the trail on the hike back up - he skinned his knees and legs up pretty badly. I guess my message is just be careful out there.

Overnight camping recs? (1 reply)

After doing probably > 20 rushed day trips of a few hours, I'm thinking it might be time for me to actually camp out near DCHS and thus be able to take my time. It seems the most logical place to set up camp would be the new DCHS Campground facilities. But I will admit, having seen the camp sites, it's really just a few rocks in a circle that they call a fire pit, and a big square of astroturf that I guess is supposed to be the protection under my tent? I don't know... I'm used to more alpine camping with trees, which is why I've come in to DCHS after staying the San Bernardino National Forest.

To be clear, I do NOT want to camp AT the springs. For one, I know it's illegal and I don't want to deal with legal consequences for me or for conservation efforts @ the springs. And secondly, I like to camp with a lot of gear (stove, cooler, etc) that I certainly could not carry down the trail with me.

But what I'm asking is: Has anyone camped close to the springs (ie within hiking distance of the actual pools)? If so, where, and what did you think of it? Anything I should pack for the desert-style landscape that I wouldn't think of, as someone who's normally in forest?

Campground just before noon. Niked around and noticed the campground was nearly full. A party was going on in several different areas. Tents were near every picnic table, almost. It seemed as if everyone I saw were having a good time and smiling. It gave my earlier comments of 'party on' was what was happening here. If only I were younger I would have crashed a party some where. Spring break was in FULL effect this day. The weather was as good as it gets. Seventy degrees and a gentle wind was at my back to help me down the trail. About 3/4 of the way down I spotted a less than 2 feet long rat snake. It was in the middle of the trail. His litening fast reflexes put him off to the side into a small plant. But still a danger. So I stomped my feet before it and he slithered down the hill. It'IS' that time of year again. Perhaps he was a party snake? When I got to the springs there were already 60-80 persons there. Behind me were many more people constantly arriving on the beach.Usually in groups of 10-15 persons. My friend Chuck was the only regular on this Saturday. Many people I spoke with were first timers. So, about 3;00pm I got my thermometerout to see how the pools were. The creek water about 8 feet upstream from the Arizona pool was 54 degrees. Alltemps were taken near the center of the pool and near the surface. The Arizona pool was 106 degrees and constanly full of people. Many said this was their favorite pool. No need to wonder why? The Anniversary pool was 103 degrees and full of people. One needed to wait for someone to get out to get yourself in. It was that kind of day. It is no wonder I left early. The Womb pool was 97 degrees and some what a party. The Serenity pool was 106 degrees. It was 108 where the hot water enters into this pool. The Crab cooker pool was 113 degreres. I spent about 45 minuets getting in and out of this uncrowded pool. Very refreshing. The Contemplation pool was 90 degrees. A large group of Hispanics were in this pool most of the day. As I started out more large groups of people were coming in, most with sleeping equipment. I left just after 4 pm. There was as many leaving as there were coming down the trail. I was just glad no one had the CCP virus. When I got back to the D.C.H.S. campground it was full of party people. I saw no empty camping areas at all. I guess Mike at the Bowen Ranch may NOT be allowing people to camp there. I do not know. But it certainly is nice at this new place. With their friendly staff and pit toilets and showers. Who needs to even go to the springs to have a good time? Party ON!

But on Friday I left behind a blue and Gray hammock, between the two trees across the creek from the pools. I can’t go back to get it for awhile (and I’m assuming it has been thrown away or taken by someone else already) but I do want to apologize to this group for my error. I feel disgusted by myself, not just because the hammock was a gift from a loved one, but because I HATE litterers. I will try to be better

Trip report 2-23-2021 Tuesday (4 replies)

I got to the Deep Creek campground just after 11 o'clock. There were about 20 people camping in the parking area. I thought it would be a quiet day? NOT. The smell of bacon and eggs was in the air.
As I got to the Mofo hill, which is the last big hill before descending down to the creek, I meet an angel. Or rather, a young woman named Angel. She was hiking in the nude. I told her it was both legal and accepted to hike nude here. So she quit trying to cover herself. She said she was from San Diego and it was her first time here.
When we got to the creek there were about 40 persons. All were nude, except a few women had shorts or more accurately g-strings on. I could tell by this I was among my own people and it was going 2 B a very nice day. There were 4 people with trash bags picking up any trash they could find. Another good sign.
I had visited on Sunday and there were more than 100 people at the springs, perhaps 150. So I left early. I noticed the Womb pool was clouded with dead algae. It was too crowded to do anything about this. So I made this trip to remedy the dead algae situation.
The creek water near the beach where the most cross was 52 degrees. Eight feet upstream from the Phoenix pool the temp was 47 degrees. The creek was less than 2 feet deep at the point where most cross.
All temperatures are from the center of the pools and near the surface.
The Phoenix pool was 104 degrees. This pool was cristal clear and aquamarine. A truly good soak.
The Anniversary pool was 104 degrees also.
The Womb pool was 98 degrees. And as clean as I could manage. Thanks to all who helped.
The Serenity pool was 107 degrees.
The Crab Cooker pool was 113 degrees. The sun was shining while I soaked there.
The Contemplation pool was 85 degrees. Warmer than expected. Possibly because of the Angel soaking there.
Jason and Howard were the 2 regulars who were as happy as could be this day self-included.
Another classic soaking day at my favorite soaking destination. Be safe and PARTY ON!

I’d like to hike down to the hot springs. Is the river crossing wild yet or manageable, I expect it to be ice cold, just need to know if it’s swift or deep ect. Also there are new ways to park. I’ve always been good with Mike at Bowen. I am not confident to drive to the freedom parking. What is the best parking for day use and I do not mind 2-3 miles hike no problem, of course less is cool!!
I missed the whole 2020 soaking year and am ready to enjoy a few hours this week .
Los Padres National Forest closes developed campgrounds thru January 6, 2021 (1 reply)

The USDA Pacific Southwest Region has issued a Regional Order that prohibits overnight camping in developed campgrounds in Los Padres National Forest and four other Southern California national forests. This Regional Order will be in effect December 8 through January 6, 2021.

The purpose of the Regional Order is to protect visitors and U.S. Forest Service employees by reducing potential exposure to COVID-19 and mitigating any further burden on our emergency responders and healthcare facilities. Current projections show that without additional steps to slow the spread of coronavirus, the number of available adult Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds in California will reach capacity by mid-December. As California along with the rest of the nation continues to experience an unprecedented surge in new COVID-19 cases, the rate of new increases threatens to overwhelm the state’s hospital system.

In response, the state on December 3 issued a Regional Stay-at-Home Order for areas where the number of adult ICU beds has fallen below 15 percent of capacity. The U.S. Forest Service’s Regional Order aligns with California’s December 3 Order that prohibits “overnight stays at campgrounds” while permitting the continued operation of outdoor recreation facilities in these areas.

Developed day use areas as well as hiking, dispersed camping and Off Highway Vehicle trails will remain open for use in Los Padres National Forest.

Visitors who have existing reservations at Los Padres National Forest concessionaire-managed campgrounds are encouraged to contact Parks Management Company or https://Recreation.gov to reschedule their visit or request a refund.

We encourage visitors to be familiar with and follow current federal and state guidelines for responsible recreation activities on public lands. Please keep health, safety and natural resources in mind when visiting Los Padres National Forest. Together, our personal responsibility will help to ensure public safety and prevent further restrictions.

Additional public information is available at Los Padres National Forest’s public website.

Trip report 12-5- 2020 Saturday (2 replies)

It was 10:30 when I got to the Freedom trailhead. It was sunny with a slight chill in the slow but steady breeze. Perfect hiking weather. While hiking in I saw 15 people hiking out with sleeping bags. All commented that they had a great time and that it was too crowded at the hot springs. Also, I noticed that the graffiti problem reported on this forum has been painted over by someone with a can of gray paint. At least the artist's DUMBASS messages are null and void. When I got to the hot springs there were maybe 60 persons. Some loud-mouthed teenagers were around the Phoenix pool. So I lumbered around the Womb pool till the loudmouths left. Which was only about 30 minutes. Their language was despicable. Then I got my thermometer out to see the temps of the pools. All measurements are from the center of the pools and near the surface. The Phoenix Pool was 104 degrees and a terrific group of people was there from some commune near Riverside. A very diverse group of enthusiastic hot spring lovers. They were fun to be around. The Anniversary Pool was only 101 degrees? This pool was constantly full of persons after a group of about 25 young people came from the Bradford Ridge trail. The Womb pool was another popular place to hang out. It was 99 degrees. The Sun does not shine on the rocks in this area. So the pools are not as hot for all of this month till the beginning of February.
The Serenity Pool was the best place to soak on this day trip. It was 109 degrees. This is the pool just below the Womb pool. Someone put sandbags in such a way that all of the water from the Crab Cooker pool was flowing into the Serenity Pool. The Crab Cooker Pool is the hottest pool next to the rock cliff. It was only 112 degrees. Before I left I soaked there for about 30 minutes. As the water in the creek is too cold for this Florida boy. But, As I was sitting in the Phoenix Pool a guy volunteered to take the temperature there. He said it was 47 degrees. This was just outside of where the water from this pool flows into the creek. It is most likely colder everywhere else. On this day trip, I only saw 2 hot spring regulars. They know who you are, Good luck Chuck. You KNOW why. As the day went on it got to most likely over 100 people. The Contemplation pool, the cool pool behind the big rocks, was 75 degrees. This was one day where people were not drinking or smoking herbs. Which as most know is unusual. It made for a very nice day. On the way out I counted seven more persons with sleeping bags and flashlights were coming down the trail. You can guess why. Happy NUDE year everybody!

Fire restrictions remain in effect Thanksgiving week (no replies)

San Bernardino National Forest officials are reminding the public that fire restrictions remain in effect for the Thanksgiving week and beyond. Despite one winter storm in early November, vegetation in much of the Forest continues to be very dry. Some lower elevation areas are even drier than in the summer, when numerous large fires broke out. Moderate Santa Ana winds are additionally predicted for later this week on Thanksgiving Day and Friday. A fire that ignites during such winds, combined with current vegetation and weather conditions, can "grow rapidly and will be difficult to control," according to the Santa Ana Wind Threat Index, a Predictive Services product from the U.S. Forest Service. Forest Service firefighters may extend staffing for 24 hour periods during that time.

"The shorter days and colder temperatures can make it feel like we are out of peak fire season, but that is not the case," said Deputy Fire Chief Scott Howes. "Visitors need to be as cautious as ever with anything that could spark a fire."

Current fire restrictions and fire-related safety prohibitions include:

No campfires

No smoking

No target shooting

No dispersed or yellow post camping (only a few developed campgrounds are open)

No entering the burn areas for the Apple, El Dorado and Snow fires

A full list of restrictions and related prohibitions can be found on the Forest's website.

Graffiti issues - terrible day (5 replies)

I wrote a trip report 11/19 that mentioned a couple instances of graffiti on the trail from Bowen to DCHS.

I went back just two days later on 11/21 and it is SO MUCH WORSE. In fact, this was an overall BAD trip to the springs.

Seemingly every quarter mile, there's graffiti. One says "you tha man," another says "keep going," another says "san bernardino ca" ... and maybe the most egregious a-hole move of all, a crude spray-painting of a naked woman's torso with an arrow pointing down the trail. As if it's "hike this way for boobs." It's really really infurating.

Add to that the increased amount of trash - someone left an empty cardboard box from their camping gear along the trail... people making illegal fires with half-burned trash inside of them.... it was awful. AND the springs were jam-packed. 12 to 15 people per pool. No one wearing masks. Three different people BLARING loud music. People getting falling-down drunk and crawling over each other, risking injury to people they were falling on. It was despicable, not at all the vibe of the springs. This is the kind of crap that makes me so mad about Instagram geotags of DCHS... part of me wants them to shut it all down for a bit to clear it out.

If you see people doing this stupid crap, please call them out. Don't bring people who are going to be disrespectful of others or nature. It makes it so much less fun for us.

A few new bits of graffiti on boulders on the way down (at least the message was uplifting instead of hate speech this time). Water in the creek is pretty cold, but not the frigid nightmare it can be sometimes - plus it was shallow enough I was barely knee-deep crossing over. The lowest pool (I think it's called the womb? Sorry, I can never remember the names) was entirely submerged, despite the creek not being that high.

Decent crowd for a Thursday. A group of 10 guys or so in Speedos at the Phoenix pool... a couple of nude guys sharing wine and romance in another pool, so I left them alone... 4 nude women speaking Russian (I think?)... and then two more women (textile) arrived later.

Not a lot of trash. Someone left a camping chair at GET NAKED beach (which right now does not have its signature rock message), though.

It's my favorite time of year at the springs where it's cool enough that I wear a sweatshirt and nothing else on the hike. Got funny looks from a guy as I was hiking out - if he wasn't expecting nudity, he was in for a surprise when he got to the bottom!

The wind nearly pushed my truck off the road. I could tell the weather was going to change. I got to the Freedom trail head at 1200 noon. It was very windy there also. I was surprised that some one had left enough trash to fill a 13 gallon trash bag. While picking it up I saw a deer. Standing just 30 feet in front of me. I stopped and stood like a statue for @ 1 minute. Then she took 3 steps forward and was behind a Bush. She stood there 5 minutes looking at me and I her. Then she hiked away down hill.
When I got to the last big hill before getting to the springs, I met a lovely couple from Santa Cruze, first timers. So I showed them around and explained history to them some. They were very grateful.
There were @ 40 to 50 persons enjoying the spring's throughout the day, mostly nude. The creek was 58 degrees at the beach crossing. Many were still swimming about. Diving from rocks and having a good time. Some one had repaired the Phoenix pool.
