One was running to the top of the CN Tower using the staircase and the 2nd was the polar bear swim in January. Chicago has their own version. Not as invigorating, from cold air to freezing water. I used to have a high tolerance for extreme cold having grown up in a place that had harsh winters. I mean we used to wear shorts in light snow, perfect BBQ weather. CA weather turned me into a spoiled little girl.

Truly delightful. I'd jump out, roll around in the snow and jump back in the hot water. Very invigorating. I attempted this once after sneaking into a hotel's pool area at midnight in Big Bear. My head and back discovered the "pile of snow" was hard packed ice. Glad the concussion didn't stop me from snowboarding the next day. I'd love to experience Deep Creek in the snow! Maybe some day soon...
Dev

Re: Winter Storm Warning

In mid-May 2011 I had a wonderful day at the springs. I didn't want to leave, so I planned to hike out by the full moon. Great plan, but a storm for which I was completely unprepared blew in. The thick, low scudding clouds made it way dark, and I stupidly didn't even have a flashlight with me. It was too dangerous to hike out in the dark, so I "slept" all night in the Womb and hiked out at first light in light rain/snow. That was the last time I hiked to the springs with only my Tiva's - the wet sand stuck under the straps of the sandals and sandpapered my feet all the way to Bowen. It was 40 deg at the car, I was freezing under my wet towel, my feet were bloody, my skin dried out and itchy, and I was exhausted from my fitful sleeping in the Womb.

Two weeks later I was back. I love this place!

One time I got caught in a snowstorm after hiking to a hotspring in the Sierras, and to survive, I stayed and dozed in the hot spring all night! Now that was an adventure!
