Enjoy. Well, when I first moved to CA in 1999, I drove out to a secluded beach in the afternoon to Santa Cruz and was walking along the shore talking on my cell phone at the time when I got a taste of how unpredictable the afternoon tides can be. One came in and knocked me out. Lost phone in the salt water and dropped to my knees to prevent being swept in. There was a man walking with his wife/girlfriend who ran over and tried to pull me back as well. I was fully clothed. The drive home was a bit wet but at least was able to go to work the next day.

Rudedog, I don't think anyone thought you tried to wade across with your clothes on, the drift I got was that you might have been upstream and were crossing over on the rocks and slipped into the water. You cleared it up for us. I hope that I can string my rope across the creek so that there will be something to hold onto when crossing. I know in the past a rope was a huge help when trying to maintain my balance.

Re: Bowen Ranch road condition including the road to parking please

I totally agree with Paul, if I have not free hiked down I will strip at the beach then cross. Sometimes I will leave my clothes on the beach side so there will be no chance of them getting wet if I slip while wading across. Anything that I do take across that might get damaged from getting wet I try to put in zip lock bags, this would be my cell phone, iPod, electronic key fob for my car, etc... These would be in my backpack that I carry over my head while wading across. Sometimes there will be a rope strung across the creek that people can hold onto for stability while wading across. If there are not too many objections I have a 100' rope that I might bring down on Thursday and see if I can string it across a shallow part of the creek between the beach and the springs. It usually depends on what the creek bottom is like, it changes so often. There might not be any good shallow spots where I could tie the rope off.

When the creek is icy cold I have learned from fellow springers to bring an empty gallon jug with me over to the hot pools. When I am ready to cross back over the creek to the beach I will fill the jug up with hot water and carry it across. Once I am back on the beach I pour the hot water over myself so I can warm back up after the icy water crossing then I dry myself off with a towel. It works GREAT! It is so much nicer than having to start the hike out with everything feeling numb after the icy water crossing.

There is no use tempting hypothemia by getting your clothes soaking wet and trying to hike out in them during these winter months. You can guarantee that there will be lots of wind on the way out and that combined with the wet clothes could be life threating.

Looking forward to my trip to the springs.

Didn't stick around for long because was en route from Vegas to LA and had a dinner to attend. No issues from the hut to the parking lot aside from the usual dip you need to navigate around. Anyhow, handful of folks including a small group of younger folks. You shouldn't have too many visitors on a Thursday. One thing ... it was cold, just barely above freezing with some drizzle occasionally as you can tell from the low clouds.

Encountered some very, very light snow falling on way back to the 15 and then moderate rain once on the highway, with very heavy downpours once I hit the 210.

12 hour overnight shift ... damn. No problems at all to the parking lot and later back and as you can see I don't own anything close to an off road or high clearance vehicle. Actually found the ride quality better than usual because recent rain has eliminated those small annoying bumps and kept the dust to a minimum. Quite smooth and no puddles as well. On the way out encountered three ranger trucks ... they were parked parallel with windows rolled down and chatting, or perhaps feasting on donuts and coffee.

I have attempted this before when it had recently rained or was raining. Usually if it is just a few showers you can make it okay but if it has rained really hard the road gets pretty muddy. One time I drove all the way from Long Beach and made it up to the ranch gate and was not allowed in to the Bowen parking area, the owner (Mike) said that the river was too swollen and he did not want to have to rescue anyone that attempted to cross it to get to the hot springs. That was a frustrating trip. One other time there was melting snow on the ground and the Bowen Ranch road was a muddy mess. My front wheel drive sedan could not make it up the slippery hills so I had to turn around and I ended up hiking in to the springs via the Mojave dam.

I was still thinking of going this Friday and hiking in via the Bradford Ridge trail but the weather report was predicting a 50% chance of rain throughout the day so I decided against it. I am going to try to get up to the springs next Thursday. Hopefully the Bowen Ranch road will be dried out by then and I can park at the ranch. If anyone makes the trip between now and next Thursday could you let me and Sam know the condition of the roads, including the road between the ranch house and the parking area?

Thanks.
