It sounds like you are familiar with both of those routes to DCHS from the split before the Bradford Ridge Trail hits the PCT. Some people last year tried to use the less steep route on their way back and since they had not done it before they passed by the beginning of the BRT on their left which goes up the Bradford Ridge and they kept hiking down the canyon on the PCT for quite a ways until they figured out they had gone the wrong way. The longer way takes maybe 10 minutes more of walking time. Its like a long switchback which allows you to get up that steep part of the canyon a bit easier than going up that steeper, shorter route. Best to allow yourself plenty of time and enough daylight for the hike out, giving you time to enjoy the great views along the way
