Because the Freedom Trail parking area is more isolated, it does tend to be a target for vandalism. And depending on conditions, the access road to the Freedom Trailhead is only passable by 4 WD. For your own piece of mind, I would suggest paying the $5 /person fee at the Bowen Ranch.
