The Basin Fire started today at approximately 3:02PM north of the of Foothill between Sterling and Quail Canyon Rd. in the city of San Bernardino. The fire quickly became established on the hillside and spread into the San Bernardino National Forest. A swift and decisive response by the San Bernardino County Fire Department and US Forest Service held the fire to 40 acres. Firefighters will work through the evening and Tuesday constructing and improving fireline as well as extinguishing hot spots within the fire perimeter. The fire remains at 40 acres and in currently 50% contained.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, if the public has any information, we are asking that they call the San Bernardino County Fire Department, Office of the Fire Marshall at (909) 386-8400. The Forest Service and San Bernardino County Fire Department entered into Unified Command during the initial attack and into the early evening. The Forest Service is now in command of the incident.
Why was the fire named Basin? Near the point of origin, there is a flood control catch basin, which is a geographically local name.
