BARSTOW — The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Barstow station will hold two community meetings to solicit feedback and comments before applying for a state grant to fund the station’s off-highway vehicle enforcement team.

The first forum will take place at the Trona Community Center at 6 p.m. on Wednesday. A similar meeting will occur in Barstow at 6 p.m. on Friday at the San Bernardino County Volunteer Building. The sheriff’s department will provide information about the grant process and give community members an opportunity to provide input.

The proposed grant application totals $115,000.

According to an OHV report prepared for last year’s grant, the Barstow station manages 144,237 acres of OHV areas. In 2005, the Barstow station contacted more than 5,000 OHV riders, responded to 25 collisions and five fatalities, the report stated.

The enforcement team, which received the grant last year, patrols popular off-roading areas during holiday weekends when small RV towns of more than 40,000 visitors pop up in the desert areas. It also works locally to respond to OHV-related complaints.

Written comments about the process will be accepted until September 27.
