Trip report 12-31-09 ouch!

My neighbor and me got to the freedom trail head before 12:00 and expected a crowd of pretty women when we arrived at the springs. My neighbor was disappointed because there was only 2 guys near the shade trees. And another guy in the anniversary pool. I told him the day was not over to just enjoy being at this great place. My words did not help with his anger.
The creek water is @ 11 inches below the dam of the anniversary pool now. The creek temp is still in the 30 degree range. Crossing the creek near the beach it is less than knee height. Because some sand has washed up there from the last storm, I suppose.
I went to the address Wizard provided to find no one home and an empty house, apparently. There was some similar looking trash to that trash on Bowen ranch road. I had intended to pick some more trash up from that site. But this is what happened.
I soaked up some rays on the beach. Then I got my hose out and cleaned the dead algae out of the Anniversary pool. I also cleaned the small pool just below there because it needed it and there were a lot of leafs there. While doing this I got a kink in my hose and a fist sized hole appeared in it makeing it useless. So , I got my knife out to save the bigger half of the hose.
Safety warning: always check to make certain the safety features are engaged before using a knife. I did not do this and almost cut my finger off. I seldom cuss but I yelled very loudly once I realized how much this hurt. Several persons ran to my aid. Only to see @ a gallon of blood squirt all over my body. The bleeding did not stop until I got in the cold creek and applied a lot of pressure on the affected area. It took over 1 hour to get back to the Freedom trail head because if I walked too fast it would bleed again. I figure some debris from the bottom of my pack got into the safety slot, causing it to be in effective.
See why your remarks were very painful Rick?. Even the wisest person in the world can be subject to accidents.Yea ! I know I am stupid.
My Dad used to have a saying ---
"If you are going to be dumb you have to be tough ! I am plenty tough because I am plenty dumb !"
Now I have even more reasons to go back to D.C.H.S.

There is a dirt road turn off that goes uphill. It goes @ 200 yards and dead ends into a motorcycle path. If you get out of you truck there is a crystal quarry there where people have broken up rocks there. Kind of unique. Go a few hundred yards further toward the sycamore and willow trees and bamboo. This spring was created by the BLM as a wild life watering hole. They drilled horizontally into the mountain and struck water which goes into a water trough which is full of roots. This time of year the water spills over and goes @ 100 feet down the hill. If you go about 1/2 a mile left of there there is another natural spring also. Just look for the greenery.
ENJOY!

The Arizona pool was 2-3 inches above the creek height , however.
I also did not mention that as I was driving home, as I got @ 1/2 mile past the Bowen ranch I saw 6 baby cows. They were in the road and blocking it. They all had a big grey tag on their ears. I would estimate them to be @ 6 months old. I blew my horn and they moved over to the right side and off the road. These cows could be a hazard to some of the speed demons I have seen driving there. Most people here do not know about the spring on the side of the road there. But as I drove past them I spotted 4 adult cows around that spring area over there. I do not recall seeing any signs warning of this hazard. This could be grounds for a huge monitory reward.
It sounds as if your accident was worse than mine. Beer and aspirin were my pain medicine and they worked fine. I don't think I hit the bone but I do have a big notch on my finger nail. I bought a metal splint that uses Velcro to hold the pressure on it. That keeps it from bleeding still..
I'll bet there is a crowd of beautiful people at the springs today !
Thanks for caring :~)

Been there, done that myself, almost completely cutting off the little finger of my left hand many years ago with a skill saw. Shattered the bone and the top half of my pinky was stickin sideways. Friggin hurt like a Big Dog! Through a series of stupid mis-haps and delays I was not given anything for the pain for nine hours. But my story has a happy ending in that the amazing docs at Loma Linda put my finger back together and it works great, with the ony residual affect being I can't quite straighten it out all the way :-)

And Jobe, you wrote, " The creek water is @ 11 inches below the dam of the anniversary pool now. ", actually that would be the Arizona Pool that your talking about :-)

Hope you get a good doc to sew that puppy back up for you Jobe :-)
